There is a use case for HP printers for the typical family. The upfront cost is about the same as Brother printers. But they have a plan for about $6 a month where they send ink cartridges to you shortly before you need it, and get about 100 pages of printing a month. For most families, that works well, pay $70 a year plus paper, and not have to worry about ink cartridges. It's low hassle. What doesn't work is buying HP ink cartridges on your own. They are overpriced and autofail after a few months.

I do agree with the ink programs, especially for low page count where the ink will dry out from only printing a little each month or when you print lots of full-page color stuff and don't want to worry. But if you print a lot of just documents, the cartridges won't dry out since you use them quickly.
