Kiev is the translation from Ukrainian to Russian to English. Kyiv is from Ukrainian to English. It has nothing to do with people moving to America insisting you change.
I was married to a first Generation Ukie. My brother in law traveled the world in a Ukrainian dance troupe. They had family there and had been to Ukraine multiple times. Never once have I ever heard the say Kyiv. It was always Kiev. They hated the Russians as well so I am certain they would not use a Russian translation
Okay, so Kiev is the proper spelling then. Thanks for clearing that up.
Bonus points for asking a francophone french person in France what the name of the country south of Canada is.
If they say "Les etats unis" then you can slap o that racist frog upside his ribbeting gullet, because natives of that country call it America.
This is really interesting considering that Ukraine is technically a part of Russia.
You might want to tell the people from Kiev that.
The Great Gates of Kiev
not The Great Gates of Kyiv
