Shit like this annoys me. I'm an old white guy, grew up in a small town in central Calif. and now people treat me like I'm a racist if I don't pronounce some Arabic, Chinese, Indian or Mexican name in the same accent as a native speaker of their language. Fuck them, they moved here, they can learn to speak with an 'American' accent.

A good way to shut them up is to ask them what the capital of France is. When they invariably say “Paris”, sneer at them and sarcastically say “No, it’s ‘Pa-ree’”.You can even toss in that obnoxious throat growl the French do when they say their “r”s.

I've lived/worked in 7 other countries for extended periods, and a few places around the US. Now I live in Texas, my speech pattern and accent usually gets me strange looks until I pick up on the local slang. Maybe I should tell people I'm a refugee and they'll give me free stuff.

Kiev is the translation from Ukrainian to Russian to English. Kyiv is from Ukrainian to English. It has nothing to do with people moving to America insisting you change.

I was married to a first Generation Ukie. My brother in law traveled the world in a Ukrainian dance troupe.They had family there and had been to Ukraine multiple times. Never once have I ever heard the say Kyiv. It was always Kiev. They hated the Russians as well so I am certain they would not use a Russian translation

It's been both for a very long time. It depends on which transliteration from Cyrillic is used. Kyiv is better for English speakers as many US reporters seem tempted to refer to the capital as "Keev".

But even in the news I’ve only ever seen “Kiev” until very recently. For decades. Maybe it’s just my personal perspective but it definitely seems like the media (American at least) universally made the switch just to talk about current events and I’m just wondering if there’s a reason

Kiev follows ISO:9, which was developed in 1995. Kyiv follows ISO/R 9, published in 1954 and revised in 1968. Kyiv is preferred by the city, as it mirrors the transliteration of the founder's name, Kyi

I’m not sure what exactly you’re trying to say, but it sounds like you’re saying “Kiev” wasn’t used until 1995 while here is a book from 1980 that says “Kiev” about 100 times
