Well personally I'm not atheist so that would be my actual argument however I was trying to argue from the atheist perspective. I suppose no if we were a different species from an evolutionary point of view it may even be to your detriment to save my child.
Let me explain better: In the news today, it's come out that humans from different parts of the world are different species. Scots are a different species than Germans. You're the Scot, I'm the German. We're neighbors, good friends, our kids are friends, etc, etc. Is it a moral obligation for me to save your kid?
Assuming its a first world type of situation then I would have to say yes.
