If you're just starting out with strength then you can follow his shit for about 3 months. After that you won't be able to keep up to the ridiculous weight increments unless you're on gear. Ditch it and find something else. Rippetoe is a meme.

One should strive to make their own workout program eventually. One that they enjoy, with the exercises they enjoy doing. You just need to take it slow, this isn't a 50 yard dash. It is a marathon and you need to workout in a manner that will lower your incidence of injury. Those joints have to last a lifetime, and if you want to workout for a lifetime, then you need to do things in a methodical manner and a manner that you find enjoyable.

Right. And sadly most people don't realize this until they've injured themselves or are of advanced enough age where protecting their joints becomes a priority.
