The curvature thing bugs me...airplane pilots would need to keep the stick slightly forward, all the time, to fly around a 'globe'. If they kept the stick rock-steady and the wings level (they do), they would fly off into space. It seems that flying straight and level, keeping the height steady (say 5000 feet or whatever) means they are flying over a relatively flat firmament.
