The core evolutionary reasoning for the existence of these psychological flaws in our brains probably lies in the fact that our genes only care about surviving and not about being right. Our genes don't care how they survive, as long as they get to copy them selves. If that means believing a bunch of bullshit, so be it.

The jump from that statement to why our brains cannot get them selves out of intellectual cul de sacs goes something like this:

Millions years ago humans traded off high levels of independence and body strength for high levels of compliance and very specific increases in our mental abilities.

If you look at a chimp, you can't really tell a chimp what to do and how to do it. Here is an experiment that shows that a chimp will just do what it wants and get the prize but humans don't understand that they can just get the prize and just follow orders:

Most people don't fully appreciate to the degree humans are behaviourally compliant. You can get people to self organize in lines just by putting out velvet ropes. Once you start to see it, its REALLY bizarre.

So, we exchanged behavioural independence for high levels of compliance. We also exchanged our body strength for high levels of intellect. But, we did not get smarter in every way possible. We only got smarter in some ways, but we also lost a HUGE amount of our intelligence in this exchange. For example, not only are chimps 6 times stronger than us, they have specific memory capabilites that are 6 times better than us. Here is an experiment where chimps can demonstrate memory that is at least twice, if not more, better than ours:

Basically, what seems to have happened is that we went through an evolutionary exchange that allowed us to succeed by accessing the benefits of network effects by selecting out individuals that cannot do high levels of organized collaboration for those that can.

One thought on the evolutionary mechanism that drives this is that we are a genocide species. We spend all of our time killing other humans and in order to kill other humans you have to be able to form war parties. In a war party you need absolute and total behavioural compliance and submission to the group in order to survive. Any war party that is made up of any members that are highly indpendent and go against the leadership of the group will be killed off along with the group.

So, what you get is a kind of persistence of belief. Our psychology has a locking mechanism where once we figure out a pattern that works, we lock it in because it is the mechanism that is required by war parties. This is the mechanism by which allows our genes to survive because those with the locking mechanism got to procreate and those that were independent got killed off. It doesn't matter if those beliefs are true or not, just that they allow your genes to copy them selves.

With respect to why people believe in flat earth, big foot and aliens, well I mean I don't actually believe most of them believe it. But those that do believe, believe it for the same reasons as white people believe in christianity and other nonsense, we are designed to do so.

We have no natural predators. When our common ancestors effectively exited being prey animals and started dominating their local geographies through highly networked highly intelligent and highly aggressive organized tribes, our biggest threats became other groups of humans.

Simultaneously, our easiest access to resources and females became other human groups. If you were smart enough to only kill the leaders and enslave the rest you were way better off than other tribes, but you had to get your economics right because you could not have enough slaves that could overthrow your tribe.

We split off from all the chimps (including bonobos) last around x million years ago. We split off from our common ancestor shared with gorillas many many millions of years before we split off form chimps. Chimps, like us, practice organized genocide:

Yes, we love war, but 'spend all our time killing humans' is a huge stretch. I certainly don't, and I don't watch sports either. I build and fix things.

I believe humans are not from Earth, our bodies are not really built for it. Sunburns is just one example.
