It definitely did. Though I did learn that other inmates had good books stashed away in their property and they would trade me for another good book or just let me read it and return it to them. The jail let you have three books in your property so once I read anything interesting in the bin and figured out others had some good stuff I would just ask all the other inmates what they had to read.
Yeah, I'd expect 'em to hoard good books.
I didn't even think about that. I am not institutionalized, I have not really spent too much time incarcerated. So I didn't know people would do shit like keeping good books out of the bin. Fucking criminals.
They presumably see them as having some value, or that they have some control over something.
In a world where you don't have control of many things, you'll seek control when you can. In jail, you don't have control of much - not even when you get out of bed, shower, what you eat, etc...
