Their sound was such a new and special thing when they came out. There was nothing like them before. It was fucking awesome. I'd have to give them credit for making alternative as good as it was.
it still sounds fresh and special today
It was such a change of pace from everything else that was on the radio at the time. You had hair bands, some pretty mild metal, pop music, and the starting days of hip hop. Then, all of a sudden, Jane's Addiction is on the scene with an entirely new sound and not just a new sound but a new sound that sounded good. Their lyrics were awesome, speaking to many - but those many were the counterculture that they spoke to. They spoke to the off-beat, the weird, the unusual... And it was fucking awesome.
Yeah some people ridiculed me for loving them but fuck you
