I dont think the press really cares about being honest anymore. It seems to me
I'm not sure that they ever really did. "Yellow journalism" has a long, long history.
Hell, even the oldest history books are full of inaccuracies, obviously intentionally done to please the people who commissioned said works.
Pretty much everything you probably 'know' about Caligula (for an ancient example) was written about him a couple hundred years later and no real contemporary evidence exists for many of the claims. The claims are largely accepted as fact, even though the writing we rely on for it was done at the behest of people who wanted to strengthen the Roman Senate over the powers of the Emperor.
Truth has always been fleeting.
That's funny.
None of the contemporary writings say he did those things that are claimed - but some did say that they were things he intended to do.
And, no... No, killing him didn't result in a bumbling moron of a replacement, if anything the replacement was even more tyrannical.
History is full of bullshit like that.
