It's been years since I did satellite dish installations but back when I was doing that stuff the independent installers would get residual payments every month for every new customer that they brought online and installed. If you can get a lot of people to switch over and they keep the service you get extra money. I didn't do that cause I really do not like selling shit to people

He didn't make any effort (any real effort) to upsell or anything. He did ask if we'd rather cellular or Starlink (as he installs them both) when we couldn't get it to use the satellite it's using now, but that was not really an effort to sell anything - he was just seeing if we'd like to explore other options and he never went into any details or anything like that.

I pointed out his own lack of cellular service (a bar or two, at best) and laughed about the idea of a cellular hotspot. I already have a phone that does that as well as any other system is going to do it, at least not without buying (real, and expensive) cell phone signal boosters. Even then, we barely have enough signal to boost and it often drops to zero bars.

But, we signed up through their website. They sent the independent installer. I don't know, but it seems unlikely that he'll get residuals in this case. I don't mind if he does. In fact, it'd be great if he did. He wasted a full four hours here on the first day. The second day he was in and out - but that's 'cause my house makes it REALLY fucking simple. There's CAT6 running through conduit all around the house. Punch through anywhere, terminate the CAT6, and you can drop your equipment anywhere you want. I picked the installation location because that one had a separate channel (CAT6) that runs to a central area of the house. It made the most sense to put the router near the center of the house. Then, run a second line to the barn that has the shop in it. After that, you're done. He was done in like an hour.

I have repeaters but the signal is good enough without using them. As we start spending time outside, I may hook a couple up to cover the front porch, balcony, and lawn.

I do not believe he will as you signed up for the service through the web. He would haver had to have sold you on the service and signed you up through his account with them to get the residuals.

Yeah, that's what I expected. (And thanks for visiting L-T and clicking an ad!)

I figure it's probably a bit like how I can get a few dollars if I convince someone to use the satellite service and they list me as the referrer. It's somewhere between affiliate marketing and MLM/pyramid schemes - except there's an actual product so it's perfectly legal.

I'll let you know tomorrow how much Google thinks your clicks are worth!

I've smoked too much today - but I'm not going to complain to myself about it. Frankly, I'm still doing awesome. Today was stressful and the storm taking the internet out pissed me off and I smoked like four cigarettes during that time period. Because of my choice to smoke more at that time, I'm now on my 9th cigarette of the day.
