They are very complicated
I'd sure as fuck not want to take the transmission in my M6 apart. I'm not even sure my mechanics would want to. We'd probably pull it and send it off somewhere, realistically. Well, it's still under warranty, so I'm not worried. Plus the car hasn't really got that many miles on the transmission. I think it's just over 9500 miles? I've owned it since 2019.
But, an older one wouldn't be too bad. So long as you pay attention to where all the clutch plates (they still exist in an automatic transmission and there are a lot of 'em) - both where they go and what direction they're supposed to go in, you should be all set.
Yeah, I've never asked the mechanics, but I'm thinking we'd just send it to a specialist. Their time is useful elsewhere and we might as well get a repair that's guaranteed/warrantied.
I have watched videos of a guy taking the plates and gears out and putting new ones in
So long as you get 'em in the right order AND facing the right direction, it's not that bad. I've been to a transmission shop and watched/talked while mine was being repaired. The big cost savings is taking it out of the vehicle for them. That'll cut your bill in half.
