Guns are constitutionally protected--by nothing--except other guns.
And if theres a disparity of firepower between a standing army on u.s. soil, and average citizen armament, then technically "guns are constitutionally protected" barely even applies.

Well the founding fathers did. Also they thought about commissioning a puckle gun but another warship cost just as much.
