Why does it look like everyone was left handed before roman?

[–] 6 pts

Proto-Sinaitic was directionless. Phoenician and Archaic Greek was written right to left. I think that it shifted when Archaic Latin came around. What you are seeing is more the direction of the writing than handedness.

I love studying the history and connections of languages ... This is fascinating. Thanks

If you don't know already, you might have your mind blown by the fact that hieroglyphs nearly 1-to-1.

Also, the A sound has been the conventional ending for female names since at least those times.

What blows my mind is, then, what are all the other symbols— phonetically speaking? 'cause our alphabet maps to only a fraction of what you see on . Fuck, I wish I could learn to read ancient Egyptian without going to indoctrination-camp for a gillion years and for a zillion dollars.

Online learning stuff is starting to pop up all over now. Some are shit, some are ok, some are somewhat good. You might be able to grab a lesson plan or get an actual online class for cheap.

Maybe it's like symbols and logos seen today? All that might say is some advertisement.

We lost some human character along the way.

I was actually talking about this the other day with the Fiancee. I speculated that one reason the West advanced more quickly was the efficiency of the written language. Like you look at the Chinese

"And see, this symbol is a forest and there's a little cabin off to the side, with a bear shitting in the woods to the right of it"

"Oh cool. What does that mean?"

"4"

For example, one thing a lot of people don't realize is the numeral system is different from country to country, not just "0, 1, 2". Here are some of the historical Chinese numerals https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_numerals#Historical_use_of_numerals_in_China

Imagine trying to do business by hand with these. All of the Western numbers are one stroke. Simple

(but not exhaustive). Even Roman Numerals were probably more efficient at the time, enough to deal with smaller numbers anyways (which was sufficient for the vast majority of use cases).

TIL if I want back in time to ancient Rome I would at least know the alphabet.

Long before the Proto-Sinaitic, there existed Old European script - a set of untranslated symbols, created by Vinča culture in southeastern Europe, ca. 6th to 5th millennia BC.

j and w as in jews, dingdong

wait a min, they even jewed the months, jewne, jewly

[–] 1 pt

so it seems jews may have introduced the letter j later on so we would stop saying ew whenever we saw them

That made me laugh. Nice one.

So English is just modern-Hebrew? Awesome, that explains it.

[–] 3 pts

The alphabet is. Some words. But the hebrews probably got their alphabet from somewhere as well. And many languages share those same words that are common to modern languages which indicates a root language farther back.

There's some bizarre similarities I've heard about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAAmwtdP1bE

I give it a watch later. Not long ago I discovered that the major alphabets have an axe of symmetry when arranged in a pyramid that is indicated by the vowels. When I find it again I will post in the sub s/strange.

Not at all. Just the system but this chart has errors. For instance, the letter D comes from Dalet or door. It's missing at the top. Also the letter Z among other errors.

?? What does it explain ??

We're the lost tribes.

[–] 3 pts

True. The Hebrews were working forests in Spain during the time of Solomon. That's where they got timbers for the first temple. Mines in North America for copper to make bronze. The Irish are descendants of the Tribe of Dan. In ancient times they called themselves Tribe of Dan in their language. Also in the northward migration the Danites named rivers after themselves. Hence, Danube. In Rostov Oblast Russia it's known as Rostov Na Dan. Then there's the Danish. Another tribe escaped to Japan and established the religion of Shintoism. Many Japanese words are Hebrew. The Japanese have Hebrew letters in their alphabet.

Every year they have the same march that King David made when he took the ark around Israel to stop the plague that God sent to punish Israel for the arrogance of King David when he numbered his troops.

To this day the Japanese have an ark they built that they march through the streets chanting "Essa, Essa!". Meaning, "Carry" in Hebrew. The paintings on the sides of the ark are of desert scenes and desert animals from the middle east. Interesting no? And there are Jewish communities in Japan who make a yearly pilgrimage to Israel.

The letter T is basically unchanged after almost 4000 years.
