Cheap but getting more expensive. Cans of beans are over a dollar sometimes.
Dried is the way to go. Assuming you can afford a means to cook them.
Having them nearly ready to eat removes a lot of calculations in terms of water and fuel. If I only had 30 minutes of power a day I would want to be boiling water for sanitation or emergency food supply rather than starting to cook dried beans.
I do agree as I alluded to. Having water could be come to be an issue too, like you're saying. We aren't there yet, so it's still a reasonable way to buy and cook for your day-to-day meals.
SHTF stocks, perhaps not so much.
