Socialism is simply the sharing of resources. Communism is that plus state control, planning, and redistribution. Basically the state owns and controls socialism.

Groups of people who subscribe to this are members of a commune. This is what OP describes. It's not communism. Communism requires government (aka, a centralized authority). Socialism does not.
