After reading through the entire article I don't think the split is as clear-cut as that.

  1. Fried started with good intentions but tried to make everyone happy, arriving at the Friday meeting
  2. Singer pretty much called out Critical Race Theory for what it was, and stated he doesn't believe it exists at the company
  3. Fried remained neutral in response, pissing off a lot of employees
  4. An anonymous employee had the last word in response: "The silence in the background is what racism and white supremacy does. It creates that atmosphere that feels suffocating to people. It doesn’t require active malice. It’s not that convenient."
  5. Meeting ends
  6. Fried does a 180: Suspends Singer and brings in "unspecified outside 'help' to address the situation"
  7. Singer quits over the weekend, as does 1/3 of the employees.

So I think what ended up happening was: - Fried's spine gave out and he let CRT and other marxist ideologies creep in and do its damage. I wouldn't be surprised if ADL jumps all over this to seal the fate of the company. - Singer held his frame and took it with him when he left. He has skill & experience, so it will be interesting to see where he goes next. - I imagine some employees left because they were virtue signalling, annoyed that Fried first supported Singer, while others likely left to follow Singer. - Likewise, I bet some of the employees that stayed did so because they're opportunists that see a gap to fill with more CRT and shit, while others stayed because they just don't care and want to write code. - Fried isn't going to hire anyone else in a hurry until their outside "help" comes in to rewrite company policies and to make sure the replacement is a full blown Marxist. Anything less and the whiners will whine that they have no safe space.

Basecamp is now a sinking ship.
