Is there a replacement yet? I might be behind the times but i stopped paying attention to windows after Linux started giving me zero problems.
Linux will work for gaming if you have the right hardware. I tried so damn many times but my graphics card (r9 280) just will not work with it. So for gaming for me anyways Linux is crap.
How is it these days? 10 years ago I figured by now linux would be at a state where if games would run decently on it that would be the end of windows.
As far as gaming it's pretty much the same. I do the standard stuff online and use it for home office type things so it works great for me. I still have windows on a partition but haven't used it for several years. It's very smooth if you are a general user.
linux mint running steam proton is fine for games, and it keeps being updated.
A lot of games with root anti cheat shit will flat out not run, but you shouldn't support that shit anyway, or you could just run a vm.
check out protondb for user reviews on game functionality through steam.
If how well games run is your reason for an operating system, you deserve Windows.
