Coffee has a very short shelf life once roasted and ground after 1 week it tastes like cheap coffee. Shitty coffee is already shit so you can use it a month later it's still shit. So shitty coffee can benefit from a sturdy durable container, but good coffee only need a bag.

[–] 5 pts

I like cheap coffee, I prefer to have to chew it, like mud.

[–] 4 pts

You were the Marine that never cleaned the coffee maker weren't you?

[–] 2 pts

Ha, never made coffee that didn't come in a MRE. Grunt nachos too, my favorite.

[–] [deleted] 4 pts

Most higher grade coffee sits on shelves for months before purchase, no different than cheap stuff. The exception would be small scale roast to order coffee which is sold directly to customer.

Which is why I roast my own coffee beans.

[–] 0 pt

I know I can google this, but how do you do it and which beans do you use?

I’m planning on starting roaring and grinding myself

[–] 0 pt

Never thought about home roasting, just grinding - thinking of getting one, maybe a percolator, the well seasoned one at AA meetings is the only coffee I drink black.

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

Higher grade coffee sold gets old fast.

Find a local roaster

[–] [deleted] 3 pts

The only local roaster near here is the epicenter of local faggotry. All the bicycle leotard faggots and such.

This is retarded. My grocery store roasts their own beans and has a roast date. All good coffee has a roast date. Here's the reality for the n00bs.... Good coffee comes in a bag because good coffee is only good for a couple weeks after it's roasted. The only acceptable way to store good coffee for any length of time is in an airtight container in the freezer. Any coffee person that enjoys good coffee will also have quality airtight containers much superior to the can that cheap coffee comes in.

Most higher grade coffee sits on shelves for months before purchase

That's not higher grade coffee, that's cheap coffee with marketing behind it. Not the same thing.

Higher grade coffee on the shelf at least has the roast date on it so you can tell if it's gone to shit or not. Freshly roasted coffee is actually pretty good for the first couple of weeks as long as it's stored in an oxygen-free package. Cheap coffee hides the roast date from you because they're far more interested in catering to the warehousing desires of retailers than they are in getting you good coffee.

[–] 3 pts

Good coffee is in a bag because it's supposed to be stored in your freezer. A can would suck for this. Keeping it in the freezer will extend life for months. If beans, many more months.

[–] 1 pt

And obvi buy beans and grind your own coffee

[–] 1 pt

I typically only get fresh whole bean stuff and grind at home. You can get away with freezing beans as well which even coffee snobs says is a viable option that doesn't affect the flavor negatively. I only make enough for me and the wife so a good hand grinder is all I need (I like the classic look as well) and generally I'm using a French press but if I'm feeling extra hip I'll break out the chemex and do pour over.

[–] 0 pt

The danger with freezing is that frost condenses on the beans, and then turns to water when they thaw. It's the water more than the freezing process itself that is the problem.

[–] 1 pt

From roast date it needs a day to a week to rest and outgas, then it’s good for maybe a month as whole beans at room temp. If you grind it, it’s good for minutes, not hours.

Try it, get good fresh roasted beans from local roastery enthusiasts, grind and drink. Yum.

Now after drinking it like that a couple days , grind two days worth. Brew one immediately and the next day brew two cups, one fresh ground and one day old.

It s deadness will be readily apparent.

If you don’t have a source on coffee, try happymug.com. I would suggest a Colombian or Brasíl, Central America is a crapshoot, oceana is too buggy and one bug home in a bean will foul the whole cup. If you don’t have a grinder, or you have a whirly blade grinder, I would suggest a hario burr grinder , can be less than $40 for a really decent one that will make a nice even grind.

Coffee is a commodity. I like the cheap coffee and think the expensive coffee only seems better to gullible humans who suffer from intrinsic value delusion and bias.

[–] [deleted] 4 pts

I'm poor

It's ok. I have been there, too. Once the money isn't an issue you will probably buy good coffee and stop making excuses for not doing so.

I'm a sucker for marketing

It's ok. I've been there, too. Once you realize you're pissing your money away you will probably stop buying expensive coffee and stop making excuses for doing so.

You are free to pretend that there is no difference in coffees, and that the better ones command a higher price. I guess it's possible that there are retarded people who would choose shitty sour Kroger urn coffee if presented the choice between that and good coffee for the same price.

[–] 1 pt (edited )

Well I am totally with you and drink freeze-dried myself because I just don't care anymore having a nice cup of coffee can be enjoyable when you can taste floral or a fruity profile for example, the kind that doesn't stick to your tongue. It's worth doing every once in awhile, and by that I mean once a year

[–] 0 pt

The profiles you describe are a placebo effect.

[–] 1 pt

I somewhat disagree. But the fact Starbucks exists strongly bolsters your position.

[–] 0 pt

Some people can tell the difference, some people can't. It matters less the more sugar you use. If you are drinking it black, it matters much more. I'm drinking it black, so it makes a big difference for me.

[–] 0 pt (edited )

That's because you're a victim of marketing and what you thought was supposed to be good coffee was just more shit marked up and marketed as good coffee. . DO NOT BUY PEET'S FROM THE GROCERY STORE. That shit is months old. Peets.com ships it the same day it's roasted. Try that shit and tell me it tastes the same. Just beware that it will turn you into a coffee snob and there's no going back from that shit.

[–] 3 pts

buy whole beans and a grinder and ur own sealed jar to store the beans in before u grind it urself every morning. semi-complicated procedure but best quality coffee possible this way.

[–] 1 pt

Buy whole beans from a company that puts the roast date on the package. Only buy beans within two weeks of roasting. Use a vacuum sealer and oxygen absorbers to seal all coffee between uses. Pain in the ass, but fresh coffee all the time.

I do grind my own beans, but there is still no logical reason why expensive whole beans come in a bag and dirt cheap coffee comes in a nice expensive can.

[–] 1 pt

Good coffee is dependent on freshness. You should use up the 1lb bag long before it can go stale. Fancier containers are pointless as they either disguise stale coffee or would simply be tossed after a week or so.

[–] 0 pt

I think Trader Joe's has decent coffee in a can.

[–] 0 pt

That's what I do. Buy quality coffee beans and store in a sealed container. Grind as you go. The lighter the roast the better caffeine.

[–] 0 pt

This is the answer.

Don't apologize. Anybody who can't understand the science behind why ground coffee turns to shit faster than whole beans or thinks operating a countertop appliance is "complicated" has a nigger-tier IQ.

Look at hoppes comment beneath you. You can rub yourself off all day feeling superior about your coffee routine but some people just don't have time for that shit, or simply don't desire spending 45 minutes labour cutting open vacuum seal bags and measuring beans and grinding and making excessively complicated coffee instead of throwing grinds in hot water in 2 minutes.

[–] 0 pt

Doesn't take 45 minutes, or even two hands. Literally made my coffee while writing that comment.

Vacuum sealing every day? Sure, it's possible to jerk off to this shit. Grinding right before you brew takes seconds. Grinders are five bucks at goodwill. This is not a high bar.

That said, I appreciate Hoppes comment immensely. Long term food prep requires oxygen absorbers, so that's a sunk cost. Extremely little effort to put one in the bottom of my jar. Sure it won't work perfectly cuz I'm not vacuum sealing, but it'll work best on the beans that need it most, i.e. the ones I grind last. It's also not a high bar, so I'll start clearing it today.

[–] 2 pts

Economies of scale.

At one time, perhaps. But these days that isn't the case.

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

I sniff coffee like you would cocaine.

[–] 1 pt

Skip the hot water and eat a spoon of instant coffee. Wash down with milk.

[–] 0 pt

Mah man! This is the life for me anymore, and I used to be such a damn coffee snob, too. Worked at multiple coffee shops over the years, pour overs and the like. Now I take a couple table spoons of nestle freezer dried and heat it up with some purified water. No additives.

Or I do like you and add instant coffee to almond milk but I also the scoop of collagen and whey protein in there. Instant coffee is the shit. Its so versatile. Wine and coffee industries are just that; industries. The deeper you get into it seeking pretentious knowledge it offers the further you get into your addiction and the further you stray from God.

[–] 2 pts

Just try to get organic coffee even if cheap. Then skip whey protein and add lots of cream instead. Add raw organic honey. Keep the gelatin.

You got yourself an amazing anti inflammatory fountain of youth

[–] 1 pt

Fresh ground rules, all others drools.

[–] 1 pt

I put collagen in my coffee every day too

[–] 1 pt

Seinfeld still has it!

[–] 1 pt

I buy not-cheap coffee in a bag from a local roaster and then put it in a cheap coffee can when I get home!

[–] 1 pt

Your friendly neighborhood roaster never meant for you to keep beans in this bag. He just didn't want you to have to carry them home in your pockets.

Alton Brown - Good Eats

Season 2 Episode 7 - "True Brew"

[–] 1 pt

Right. My local roaster is a very small business, just a little coffee shop with a big ass stone oven right where you can see it! They're not big enough to be able to afford anything but simple paper bags for beans. They make excellent coffee though, so you just take it home and put it in your own container.

[–] 1 pt

Buy a can of shitty coffee and use it on your garden or to exfoliate your skin, then store your good coffee in the can.

I do buy shitty coffee now and then, mainly for the cans. Some of the "shitty" stuff is better than others. I am working on a can of no-brand stuff right now that is drinkable. Today I am drinking some nice fresh grind coffee though.

[–] 0 pt

Exfoliate your skin?! What man does that. Get out of here woman

[–] 1 pt

There are no men on the internet. Dick pics or GTFO.

[–] 1 pt

I have to admit I laughed like a retard at that Thanks for the first lulz today

[–] 1 pt

The shitty bags ensures you have to buy more of it driving up demand and, potentially, pricing because you spilled or ruined most of what you already bought.
