Talk to someone who actually remembers that era. They weren't walking around in PJs but, other than Sunday church, the average man was not walking around in starched shirts.
Mad Men is not a realistic portrayal, FYI.
I'm old enough to remember that era. The average person did walk around in collared shirts and at minimum, khaki pants. The average women wore loose fitting clothes in morning and afternoon to clean the home and go shopping, and then bathed and changed into a dress for the evening.
Mad Men, other than being a bit too overly polished, hit the nail on the head for advertising execs of the era. My father was an ad-man and trust me, clothes and presentation were of utmost importance. My very elderly mom still has designer dresses in her closet from that 60's.
There's no denying that the standards were higher then. My argument with the retard in this thread was simply that people didn't walk around in starched Sunday-wear everywhere they went and not even ironed shirts. That assumes blue collar -- which many more people were then -- and I'm sure ad execs had different standards yet.
I'm certain the retard was basing his opinions on pictures from the era which are going to have a selection bias towards people who would spend their money on a camera and would thus be less likely to be a farmer or the mechanic in a local town.
If I'm honest, I'm pretty sure the entire thing was just an opportunity for the retard to tell everyone how thin and fit he is.
Madmen is not a realistic portrayal of damn near anything - it was just anti-white, ret-conning spew by some hateful people.
OK, then go back even earlier. My point stands.
If there were people still around from earlier (barely) they would tell you the same thing. If you take pictures from the early 20th century as your data source you then have to keep in mind that people dressed up to "go to town". It's selection bias.
Your point does not stand. It's ill-informed.
What are you even talking about?
Have you not seen videos of people on the streets in early 1900s Germany for example? Everyone dresses extremely well.
Go to Italy today even and it highlights how disgusting Americans are.
Stop being a fat lazy fuck and stop dressing like you're going to bed when you leave your home. Have some self respect and be man.
No, people dressed well whenever there was a chance of seeing anyone else. You can pretend "go to town" meant doing something special, but it was no different than going out today to shop, eat, or anything else social.
Most Americans dress like the fat pigs they are. Oink.
no one is mentioning how much it costs to dress impeccably. try to find a quality leather belt (not made in china) for under $100.
let's not get started on shoes.
As I was trying to explain to the retard elsewhere in this thread, its not like folks wore their "best" every day. But, yes, nice stuff is expensive.
A quality pair of shoes can last you 5-10 years. More money upfront but you save in the long run.
My husband and I have closets full of extremely nice clothes - many of which cost us less than what T-shirts and jeans go for today. Yes, it takes internet time and knowledge of where the best deals and sales are, but it's easy to do when you're not a lazy pig.
are you calling someone a lazy pig? because it sounds as if someone is a glutton.
where are you going that tees and jeans are more than ten dollars?
