How is Linux for gaming nowdays?
Supposed to be almost as good as Windows. VM hosts are capable of 3D emulation for the games that don't work properly in Linux natively. I did a test with a game that wouldn't run on any CPU with more than 4 cores and I had no problem with that one specific game.
I should try it out, I really hate using Windows becuse of Bill Gaytes n sheeit.
I hear some games are still having trouble due to their DRM.
DRM games are shit anyways as you'd only be allowed to use them so long as the servers continue to be supported.
It's actually pretty good. All the AAA games that I'm playing right now with the exception of Resident Evil work fine under Ubuntu. So I still dual boot to Win10 when I want to play RE. Otherwise it's Linux all the way. To be clear many people have gotten RE to run under Linux but nothing I've tried so far has worked for me.
If I played mutiplayer games it would be a different story however. Most multiplayer games only work with Windows. Likewise if I had a VR headset I'd still be tied to Windows.
I've been using Linux for servers for almost 20 years but the Linux desktop environments have always been problematic. I never actually expected to be able to switch for personal use but it appears that Linux has finally come into its own. With the caveats mentioned above I have no problem recommending it.
Well you're using shitty Ubuntu instead of Pop!_OS, Manjaro, or any of the other non-noob distros
Actually I'm using pop_os and I really like it. Previously Manjaro was my goto but I did not have the same luck getting games to run. Today you want an Ubuntu based distro if you're going to game.
It's fine. Install Lutris and you can play about 99% of your steam library. Games not on steam can be run through it as well. It may take some friggin around to get things to work, but most of the time it's seamless.
gaming? I haven't gamed for real since windows xp 6 years ago.
Because you moved to Linux or because of what that guy said last time you played CS?
Moved to windows10 then 6 month later tried linux dual boot then deleted windows completely and had 6 linux distro's installed on same computer.
reread then second reply, never played CS, my game was diablo2 mod medianXL, superb new game when you get unlimited stash and the cube it's insane the weapons and armor you can create.
I couldn't pick out a CS game video unless it said CS in a logo since I've never touched the game. I used to read Penny Arcade over 10 years ago and they abused their CS playing coworker friend constantly so I took that as a hint that losers are the only ones that play that game. Yeah it's a simplistic reason but it's the truth.
