I've been feeling like I need to stretch but not the stretches I did to warm up for high school sports, something movement oriented. Does anyone do any of that? If you do are there any guiding materials or videos out there that start with the basics?

I don't do warmup or stretches, I just lift my 1RM and leave.

I just start at a light jog myself and then go straight to the physical therapy elastic bands for the workout but I want to get some better mobility throughout my body. I just feel too stiff. I'm at my dad's house right now and I'm watching him suffer with his mobility and it's making me feel really motivated to do something to not have this happen to me.

That sounds like something Yoga would fix.

I really can't do yoga anymore. I used to when I was in my thirties but I really hurt myself doing it. It's really hard not to go all out with yoga. So I had an overexertion injury.

The time spent stretching could be time spent talking to babes. You gotta maximize your time and your gains.

Only warmups I do are getting on the stationary bike to spin for 3-4 minutes. Helps my knees, hips and ankles on squat days.

have you considered Tai Chi

No, I didn't think that was stretching?

hmmm that's a fair point. i don't really know much about it. i thought it was like stretching and yoga and balancing your chi and what not.

all I know are the basic ones we did in wrestling and whichever ones the trainer did in P90X.

P90X is how I first learned about yoga. And I did it for about 4 years until I hurt myself really bad. I wouldn't say I was really good but I definitely was really flexible. It is just culturally appropriated swedish stretching from what I've read.

Daily dynamic stretch routine before any and all physical activity (to include deals/ presentations/ teaching/ performances). I've learned the hard way that skimping on it is an invitation to get fucked up.

Yoga twice a week. Was introduced to the practice a decade or so ago when I wore a younger man's gi. Us Mighty Broseffs swaggered into a yoga studio to help improve our mobility, pliability and proprioception. Walked in studs. Walked out humbled. Those little yogi bitches kicked our asses in ways we didn't know assess could be kicked. Eventually whole sale traded my skull bangery mat life for a single yoga mat and embraced the supple tenets of active longevity. Highly recommended.

I used to do yoga. But I broke myself so I had to back off. But I used to practice at home and then I went to a yoga studio for about a year. I figured I would learn the technique before I went and get some stamina which I did so I didn't embarrass myself in front of the girls. I still had a lot to learn but I was able to hang pretty well.

One thing I do every day is make sure I can put my palms on the ground, bending at the waist while keeping knees locked. If I can't do that it means my back is fucked up again.

I do this as well. My back and hips are constantly sore. So this is why I asked about motion stretching or I guess it's called dynamic stretching.

I don't stretch because I'm not an old geezer.

[–] 0 pt

When you get old you'll become a geezer cause you don't stretch now.

Nah, all my elders are as athletic as they were when they were younger.

[–] 0 pt

That's cause they never stopped stretching

I do 15-20 minutes of static stretching and holds (30 seconds each) before each workout. Mostly legs and hips due to stiffness when I’m not warmed up.

[–] 1 pt

Static stretching, hmmm. Is that like ground stretching before you run?

[–] 2 pts (edited )

Just holds. No bouncing. 30 seconds per position. Moderate stretch with no pain. Mix of standing and seated positions.

What's wrong with those old school stretches? They've worked for me for decades.

[–] 1 pt

I was just wondering if there's anything else that are more movement oriented instead of the old track warm-up stretches I used to do.

You can do something else other than getting out of bed and stiffly walking around going "ah shit" while your joints pop for the next ten minutes?

My bones only severely hurt for about 3 minutes after I get out of bed. But I have constant pain all day and my hips and in my lower back. It sucks getting old. I think it's when my spine recompresses, that's when everything goes south.

Time to visit the chiropractor again. Also have him show you recommended stretches for your back.

I'm not a fan. The last one I went to hurt me and then tried to get me on a 40 visit schedule followed up with a payment plan because my insurance would only cover 5 visits.
